Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to the questions collectors ask us most often about Moroccan fossils. If your question is not here, please use our contact page.

Is a mosasaur a dinosaur?

No. Mosasaurs were marine reptiles belonging to the Squamata, the group that includes lizards and snakes. They lived in the sea during the Late Cretaceous, at the same time as the dinosaurs on land. Plesiosaurs were also marine reptiles and were not dinosaurs either. Read more in our guide Mosasaur vs Dinosaur.

How old are Moroccan mosasaur and plesiosaur fossils?

Most come from the Maastrichtian phosphate beds of Morocco, the last stage of the Cretaceous. The upper part of these beds formed less than one million years before the extinction event about 66 million years ago. The wider Moroccan phosphate series continues into the Paleocene and Eocene, which is why some fossil shark teeth, such as Otodus obliquus, are younger.

Where in Morocco do the fossils come from?

Marine reptiles, sharks and fish mainly come from the phosphate basins, especially the Oulad Abdoun Basin near Khouribga (including the Sidi Chennane area) and the Ganntour Basin near Benguerir. Spinosaurus and Carcharodontosaurus teeth come from the Cretaceous Kem Kem beds of eastern Morocco, and trilobites from Devonian rocks. Each listing shows the locality reported for that specimen.

What does “in matrix” mean?

Matrix is the natural rock or sediment in which a fossil was preserved. A fossil “in matrix” is presented partly embedded in that stone rather than fully extracted, which keeps its geological setting visible.

What are the sizes in the listings?

Sizes are given in inches and centimetres, as recorded for each specimen. If you need another measurement, such as width or weight, ask us before ordering.

What is the Sold Fossils Archive?

It is a reference collection of specimens that have already been sold. These listings stay online so collectors can see the range of fossils we have offered. They cannot be purchased. Browse all fossils for current specimens.

Who are bulk and wholesale lots for?

Bulk lots of mosasaur, plesiosaur, shark and fish teeth suit schools, museum shops, resellers and collectors who want several pieces. Confirm the quantity in each lot and review all photographs before ordering. See Bulk Fossil Lots.

How should I care for my fossil?

  • Keep it indoors, dry and away from strong direct sunlight and large temperature or humidity changes.
  • Dust it gently with a soft, dry brush. Do not wash it with water or use cleaning products.
  • Place large specimens on a stable, level surface or their stand, away from busy walkways.
  • Handle by the base or the strongest area, never by thin teeth or edges.

Where can I find shipping and return information?

Please see our Shipping policy and Refund policy.

Can I ask for more photos or details?
